This Qi2 car mount is cheaper than a MagSafe charger and can fast-charge your iPhone 15

A new car mount for your smartphone just launched that offers a rare combo: Qi2 wireless charging at high speeds — and at a reasonable price. The Qi2 car mount, from accessories maker ESR, offers 15W wireless charging to fast-charge your iPhone 15 and 15 Pro at its maximum capacity while you’re en route.

With a launch price of $30.99, the new car mount is less costly than many other 15W MagSafe-compatible chargers on the market. For comparison, Apple’s standard MagSafe Charger (not meant for in-car) is priced at $39. Many MagSafe car mounts (such as this one by Belkin) cost twice that amount.

ESR’s new car mount is Qi2-certified by the Wireless Power Consortium, meaning it’ll work with any Qi2-compatible device. The company states its Qi2 car mount can charge an iPhone 15 Pro Max to full battery in just over two and a half hours.

At present, the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro are the only Qi2-certified smartphones. Android smartphone makers appear to still be working on it. According to Android Police, Samsung chose not to include Qi2 in the Galaxy 24 because the product was in development before the wireless standard was complete.

Qi2 was announced in January 2023, but it’s only recently that devices have started to come out that are certified to work with the new charging standard. Even in September 2023, with the standard finalized, the iPhone 15 could only promise it would support Qi2 eventually — the certification process just wasn’t ready yet. But there’s been progress since then, and dozens of Qi2 products from companies like Anker, Belkin, Baseus, and others have since been certified. Tesla’s profits improved slightly, but still down compared to last year

Tesla reported earnings of $7.9 billion in net income on $25.2 billion in revenue during the fourth quarter of 2023. The figures represent an increase in revenue, up from $24.3 billion the same time last year.

The company’s profit margins improved slightly but are still down compared to last year’s. The company reported margins of 8.2 percent, up slightly from 7.6 percent the previous quarter but down from last year’s 16 percent.

Tesla used to have historic profit margins, sometimes as much as 20 percent, but a series of price cuts have caused its once-vaunted margins to drop into more earthly territory, worrying investors.

Also fewer Tesla vehicles qualify for the federal EV tax credit, thanks to strict new rules for the sourcing of battery materials. The performance version of the Model 3, the long-range version of the Model X, and three versions of the Model Y still qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit, which can now be applied at the point of sale.

It was a pretty momentous quarter for the company, with the long-awaited release of the highly polarizing Cybertruck, as well as news that the refreshed version of the Model 3 would be coming to North America. But recent high-profile stories, like Hertz replacing some of its Tesla fleet with gasoline-powered cars and Tesla’s failing charging network in cold-weather cities like Chicago, have dampened the outlook for the company in 2024.

Tesla is also facing the existential challenge of losing its place as the world’s top producer of electrified vehicles to BYD. The Chinese company said it produced 3.02 million EVs in 2023, as compared to Tesla’s 1.81 million cars. However, BYD’s figures include 1.6 million battery-electric cars and 1.4 million hybrid vehicles — so Tesla can still claim to be the top producer of pure EVs.

Hours before the earnings report was released, Reuters reported that Tesla plans to start production on an all-new electric crossover vehicle in mid-2025. The company has apparently invited suppliers to bid to work on the car and is forecasting producing 10,000 vehicles weekly. Speculation is that this could be Tesla’s long-promised $25,000 vehicle for mass-market consumers.

But Musk has been making investors nervous by making statements about spinning off Tesla’s artificial intelligence work into a separate company if he is unable to increase the size of his ownership. Such a move would drastically undercut the company’s value, which is largely based on futuristic vibes.

Netflix Premium and Starz is $25.99 per month for Verizon customers

As predicted, Verizon has swooped in with a new streaming bundle deal — and now that Netflix has once again raised prices for some customers, this one might be worth a look.

Right now, Verizon customers can get Netflix Premium and Starz together for $25.99 per month, the company announced. Even better, Verizon myPlan unlimited subscribers can get an extra $5 off using their additional myPlan Plus Play perk, which is a $15 Plus Play credit members can buy for $10 every month. The offer applies to both new and existing Netflix Premium subscribers as well as new Starz subscribers.

Given Netflix Premium costs $22.99 per month (and, in all likelihood, will probably increase at some point this year) and Starz typically costs $9.99 a month, that’s not a bad deal. You’re essentially saving $6.99 every month, or $83.88 over one year, for ad-free access to the entire Netflix and Starz catalogs.

That includes shows and movies like Squid Game: The Challenge, Fool Me Once, The Crown, Minx, Outlander, John Wick: Chapter 4, and more.

The new bundle deal will be offered on Verizon’s Plus Play service, a hub where you can access and manage all of your streaming subscriptions.
